Sustenance

During the pandemic lockdown, I expressed my feelings and wishes by hanging a bamboo chair in the air. An empty chair symbolizes silence and emptiness to me: the person has gone, and the chamber remains deserted. In addition to being negative and worrying about the uncertainty of the future, I have a glimmer of hope. Bamboo was often used in ancient times to express the indomitable and upright characteristics. Poet Su Shi once said, "I would rather have no meat than live without bamboo." At the same time, it also has the meaning of “peace.” In the folk, people use bamboo to express their expectations for a better life. In my installation, the hanging chair symbolizes the quietness and uncertainty under the pandemic. On the other hand, the material of the chair — bamboo, is my hope of getting better and bringing peace to the world. Through its rising, the installation turns into spiritual sustenance.
